CATAWISSA CREEK RESTORATION ASSOCIATION

Did You Know...

...that the Catawissa Creek Restoration Association, a non profit organization, was founded in 1997 to promote the recreational use of the Catawissa Creek from it's head waters in Luzern/Schuylkill Counties, to it's terminus in the Susquehanna River in Columbia County.

...that the Audenried Tunnel, Catawissa Tunnel, & Green Mt. Tunnel all contribute mine drainage water to the Catawissa Creek. This water with a pH of 4 contains among other things, diluted aluminum in parts per million (PPM), above acceptable levels. Raising the pH of the water to a level of 6 or above causes the aluminum to drop out to suspension, and lay harmlessly on the bottom of the creek bed as aluminum hydroxide. In this condition, it is non toxic to aquatic life.

...that through contributions, and membership dues, the CCRA has purchased tons of high calcium carbonate limestone sand, and dumped it into the upper sections of the creek at various locations in order to raise the pH of the water. Latest testing at the Rt.924 bridge shows the pH holding around 5.

...that the CCRA is currently working to find permanent solutions to the pollution problems on the Catawissa Creek

...that there is so much more! The technology and the help to get the job done, and done right, is out there...and public support, and participation is welcomed.
